Piplup — most underrated Water starter or is Empoleon overrated?
Following up on the earlier Empoleon thread — where does Piplup as a line rank against the other Water starters overall? Feels divisive compared to how universally loved the little penguin design is.

Honestly, Piplup isn't underrated; it's just niche. Empoleon is overrated because people forget it has terrible speed and a bulky, mediocre typing. Squirtle is the true hidden gem. Piplup's design is cool, but its gameplay is forgettable compared to Gyarados or Milotic. Don't let the hype fool you; it's a solid mid-tier pick, not a secret weapon.

Piplup is a solid Water starter with useful defensive options, while Empoleon adds the valuable Steel typing. Whether it feels underrated or overrated largely depends on your team and preferred playstyle.

Empoleon isn't overrated. Its Water/Steel typing gives excellent bulk and resistances, plus strong special attacks. Piplup itself is a modest early game, but Empoleon is a top-tier Water starter, just slow.

Kieran is interesting because his character changes significantly throughout the story. His insecurity, ambition, and relationship with the player give him more development than many typical Pokémon rivals.
