Nidoran — male or female, which one do you actually pick?

Always end up going back and forth on this — Nidoran male evolves into Nidoking and female into Nidoqueen, and both lines are solid in their own way. Which one do you actually catch/use in a playthrough, and is there a real competitive edge to one over the other or is it mostly preference?

I usually pick Nidoran♂ because Nidoking feels more useful and versatile to me, especially with its wider move pool. That said, Nidoqueen is great too, so if you prefer a bulkier Pokémon, Nidoran♀ is a solid choice.

It mostly depends on your team and preference. Nidoran male and female eventually evolve into different Pokémon with different stats and moves, so I'd choose based on the role you need rather than treating one as universally better.
