Gothitelle — worth using or is it just a stepping stone Pokémon?

Question

Gothitelle's Shadow Tag ability seems like it should be more useful than it is in practice. Anyone actually run it seriously, or does it get outclassed before it can make use of the trapping gimmick?

govind · Answer

Gothitelle is more than a stepping-stone Pokémon, offering valuable support through Trick Room, Shadow Tag, Fake Out, and Heal Pulse, though its usefulness depends heavily on the format and matchup.

Jason · Answer

Gothitelle is more than just a stepping-stone Pokémon, but it depends on what you need. Its Special Attack and Psychic typing can make it useful, especially with moves like Psychic/Psyshock and coverage options, but its Speed is low and it has some awkward matchups. I’d use it if you like Gothitelle, but competitively there are usually stronger Psychic-types. Personally, I’d keep it if it’s doing well for you rather than replacing it just because it isn’t considered top-tier.

Ankit · Answer

Gothitelle can have useful roles depending on the Pokémon game and battle format. Its Psychic typing and abilities, including Frisk and Competitive, can provide strategic value. However, its usefulness varies significantly between games, movesets, abilities, and competitive formats, so it is not simply limited to being an evolution-stage stepping stone.

Soren · Answer

Gothitelle can be useful when its defensive abilities, Psychic typing, or support moves fit the team. Its value depends heavily on the generation and battle format, so it isn't necessarily just a stepping stone.

Alex · Answer

Gothitelle is worth using if you can take advantage of its niche, rather than treating it as just a stepping-stone Pokémon. Its strong Special Defense, support moves, Trick Room access, and especially Shadow Tag can make it useful for trapping opponents and supporting teammates.

Vicky · Answer

Gothitelle can be worth using, especially with Shadow Tag, which lets it trap opponents and support teammates. It’s more of a specialized support/trapping Pokémon than a straightforward attacker.

Aney · Answer

Gothitelle can be useful depending on the game, moveset, and role you want. Its Psychic typing and ability options can give it value, although team composition matters when deciding whether to use it.

Aney · Answer

Piplup has always been a popular Water starter, and Empoleon gives it a strong final evolution. Whether Empoleon feels underrated depends on the game, moveset, and team you're building.
