Caterpie — does it have any use beyond the first route?

Caterpie is basically every trainer's first catch in Kanto but curious if Caterpie has any reason to stick around past the early game, or is it strictly a stepping stone to Butterfree?

Not much for battle honestly, but it evolves so quickly that it's great for an early Bug type. I always keep one around just for the nostalgia.
